Ahhhh….yes….fashion, accessories and jewelry on the real life male models who unwittingly walk the catwalks of airport corridors. There they are, successful Hong Kong businessmen sporting a mix of casual attire and suits, with practical briefcases in one hand and dainty paper bags with designer logos in the other; in and out of glistening shops: Giorgio Armani , Gucci, Hermes, Hugo Boss, Prada, Ralf Lauren, Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo (yes they’re all on level 6)…stopping to buy luxury jewellery gifts form David Yurman and IWC Schaffhausen …but wait…

…What Jewelry are the Men Wearing?

I watch as men’s wrists move, and fingers reach into wallets or pull out money clips and pay for their chosen gifts. It’s obvious. While they’re buying gold, platinum, silver, gemstones or diamonds for their ladies, they themselves wear titanium rings, watches and titanium bracelets. How can I tell?

Recognizing Titanium Rings and Jewelry

Titanium is a grey-white metal that is made into distinctive steely jewelry, different from sterling silver or white gold (although it may be crafted so as to appear similar to the rich grey tones of platinum), but it’s usually less lustrously polished than platinum, to say nothing of the fact that top titanium jewelry designers often have signature styles that are recognizable, square, domed, brushed, or the famous titanium cable rings.

Titanium Jewelry Wearers – A Different Species of Men

Titanium rings (and titanium men’s jewelry as a whole) has an air of distinction, of success, masculine boldness and casual elegance. The minimalist sleek designs are perfectly suited for confident men who know understated is not equal to ordinary, and tensile is not about hardness alone but strength with flexibility. Men who wear gold are a different species from the men who choose titanium rings.

And that’s just one little conclusion I jump to while people watching waiting for my flight…(Maybe I can do the same in London, then re-evaluate my findings.)

A Hong Kong Gold Dealer who wears Titanium

I finally board the plane and find my seat beside a gregarious Chinese gentleman (casually attired in designer jeans, an Armani jacket over a white t-shirt, accented by a loosely knotted silk scarf, and on his fingers are three unusual rings, and a grey-white link bracelet on his wrist). I naturally ask him about his titanium. He laughs, not only wondering how I know what metal his jewelry is made from, but pleasantly surprised since he’s a Hong Kong jeweler on route to do business in London. His name is Mr. Chen. Although Mr. Chen is a gold and gemstone dealer he says he always chooses titanium jewelry for himself. Why? He laughs again. It’s strong as steel yet lightweight, scratches less than gold, is hypoallergenic, doesn’t easily bend out of shape and comes in modern designs.

He Speaks, I Take Notes and Nod

He says there’s a unique titanium rings supplier in Hawaii he sometimes orders from, and gives me a list of jewelers that make quality, unusual designs and says most of them sell their products online too, which reminds him, he needs to update his gold jewelry website…and yes I fail to put periods in this paragraph because Mr. Chen doesn’t stop long enough to take a breath, but as he speaks, I take notes and nod, and when many hours later we arrive at Heathrow airport, Mr. Chen departs to make jewelry deals in London and I depart to catch another flight to Warsaw to meet my husband, pack his things and move to…. Spain.

What’s all the fuss over titanium rings really about?

Now at last, settled in Andalucía, I finally have time to write about the top 10 Jewelry stores that have the world’s best titanium rings …oh….but first, you might be asking yourself, what’s the allure of titanium? Is it considered a precious metal or an industrial one? Is it really used to make airplanes and replace human bones? What’s all the fuss over titanium rings really about?

The Allure of Titanium and its Many Uses

Titanium is not considered a precious metal, rather an industrial or commercial one with aesthetic applications like: jewelry. It’s not “precious” because it’s not rare or scarce; it’s a metal that’s plentiful on earth and also found in meteorites, the sun, the moon and certain stars. It’s believed that titanium exists on earth due to a supernova explosion, perhaps billions of years ago, that literally left titanium stardust.

Besides the appeal of wearing a ring that’s made of “stardust”, titanium’s allure is obvious when you consider it’s none-corrosive, resistant to saltwater and chlorine, impervious to most acids, gases and chemicals, is nonmagnetic, is inert and therefore hypoallergenic, almost as strong as steel but half as heavy, and can be alloyed to have a tensile strength of as much as 180,000 pounds per square inch.

Colored Titanium Jewelry?

Although titanium is grey-white in its natural state, it is a refractory metal, which means that its oxides are refractive, so that during an electrolytic heat treatment called anodizing, titanium oxide will react with heat and refract causing a spectral color effect, which is how blue titanium rings (and other colored titanium jewelry) are made. (It is the same principal that allows for the making of the famous black titanium rings as well.)

The Kroll Process

Although titanium has been on earth for billions of years, it’s a relatively new metal on the commercial market, since the process of refining the metallic oxide element from where it’s found in certain types of iron ore, rutile ore, titanite, ilmenite and other minerals, is extremely complex and has only been a commercially viable operation in about the last half century – since the mid 1940’s when William Kroll produced titanium by an innovative method that is still the most common one used today: the Kroll Process. This method of retrieving the metallic element of titanium from the base ore is so complex that it has taken modern technology, and a plethora of experts, decades of research and through trial and error to arrive at a means to extract and process titanium in a manner that is even remotely cost efficient.

Titanium processing methods continue to develop on a quest for better and cheaper processing, but to this day, the price of titanium is almost entirely based on it’s difficulty to refine, which requires expensive high-tech equipment that can withstand temperatures of over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit and are vacuum sealed to prevent reactions with oxygen. The process is done in four basic stages:

• Reduction of titanium ore into sponge
• Melting of sponge to form ingots

• Forming of billets / bars / sheets / pipes

• Fabrication into industrial or artistic forms

Aerospace, Architecture and Medicine

One of the first commercial uses of titanium was by the US Department of Defense in the aerospace program for such things as jet fighters, jet engines, missiles, tanks, ships, submarines, firewalls, fuselages, landing-gear, hydraulic tubing and disc brakes. The Apollo, Gemini and Mercury space capsules were made mostly of titanium, and space shuttles have components of this strong, light metal.

Titanium has expanded into being an essential metal for architecture, like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao Spain (the largest titanium covered building in the world completed 50 years ago), the Frederic C. Hamilton Building in Denver, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca (completed in1993), and the Monument to the Conquerors of Space in Moscow.

It is used as well in the making golf clubs, bicycles, tennis rackets, computer cases, watches, eyeglass frames, dental castings and medical implants like: bone, cartilage, hips, joints and heart valve replacements, and is also used in pace makers, wheelchairs and surgical instruments.

Titanium 6.4 is aircraft grade titanium with a tensile strength of 150,000 pounds per square inch, and extra hard titanium is 6.6.2 with a tensile strength of 180,000 psi.

But we’re talking about titanium jewelry, what does it matter if it’s used for airplanes, heart valves and buildings?

It matters because the properties that make titanium strong and light for an airplane make it strong and light on your finger or wrist; and the biocompatibility that allows it to be used to replace a heart valve is why it won’t make you get an itchy allergic rash on your skin; and the reason it’s used in submarines is the same reason your titanium ring won’t oxidize when you swim in the sea or in chlorinated pools; and the fact that it’s resistant to most acids and chemicals makes it easy to clean and not prone to tarnishing like silver; and it’s tensile strength, which is enough for supporting buildings, is what makes a titanium ring not be hard without being brittle and less prone to getting scratched or dented like gold or precious metals, and that’s why it makes great disc brakes and landing gear and also modern mens rings!

Titanium’s Added Allure for Men

Titanium has an added allure for men, and that is it’s manliness; it’s industrial none-jewelry related nature lends to it a physiological connotation of epitomizing strength and practical masculinity – and that’s titanium’s allure when it comes to men’s jewelry.

Not Just Another Jewelry cliché

Since titanium jewelry arrived on the market just over 20 years ago, it tends to be characterized by the sleekness of its contemporary designs that are not traditional or retro or based on old jewelry clichés (or forged from a metal that brings to mind ladies diamond rings or fairytale treasure chest), but clean and unfussy, chic modern jewelry exclusively designed for men. It’s possible that if titanium had been able to be processed earlier in history, it may have become the standard for jewelry – not gold, silver or platinum.

Though there are women’s titanium rings and ladies titanium jewelry (like titanium engagement rings with diamonds, and many styles of ladies titanium wedding rings), it’s still safe to say that (if we’re going to separate metals into masculine and feminine) titanium is certainly a masculine metal.

Black Titanium Rings

As previously stated, there are complex heat treatments (using an electrolytic procedure called anodizing) to which titanium can be subjected in order to change it’s color from grey-white to colors and even to pure black, creating a whole gamut of black titanium ring* styles that are very suited to men. Black titanium rings for men come in a wide variety of qualities – not all are the same. Remember: titanium is NOT black. All black rings have been treated in one way or another. How deep they are treated will dictate the quality of the ring.

*A note about black titanium rings:

They are gorgeous and available in lots of high quality styles, (and I will shortly recommend some) but a black titanium ring or a blue titanium ring is not exactly the same as a grayish-white one in terms of being scratch resistant for which titanium has become famous.

Low quality heat treated men’s titanium rings may only be black on the surface (or at best part way through the top layer of metal), and therefore if scratched may lose their blackness or become scruffy looking over time.

If you’re going for a black titanium wedding ring DO NOT be tempted into buying cheap titanium rings because you will be very disappointed when a couple months after your wedding, what you thought to be an indestructible, un-scratch-able titanium ring turns out to be a scratched up mess.

Spend the money and get a high quality black titanium wedding ring that has been treated to become black (or blue or whatever color) at least halfway through the thickness of the band (or go for a titanium ring that is the natural grayish color or a titanium gold ring blend.

Who are the BEST Titanium Jewelers, Designers and Manufacturers?

It is just the top 10 that have been recommended to me and I have investigated. Does Edward Mirell have Aircraft Grade Titanium?

Edward Rosenberg states that the World Titanium Council does NOT endorse aircraft grade titanium for rings and therefore the Edward Mirell collections do not use titanium alloyed with aluminum, vanadium and tin due to the hardness of the metal, despite the fact that many of his competitors do use aircraft grade titanium for their rings. Are Aircraft Grade Titanium Rings Really Dangerous? What are the Risks?

If the hardest titanium alloy, aircraft grade, is used in a ring and then requires removing (by cutting) in an emergency, it is true that it will not be so easily cut as a gold or silver band. To cut a titanium ring requires special titanium cutters, which some paramedics and hospitals are equipped with (but not all), and therefore could present the danger of losing a finger.

Consider Your Work Environment – Is Wearing A Ring Advisable?

This danger should in no way be taken lightly, however, I wish to point out that aside from extremely bizarre accidents most people who normally wear rings everyday in an office or none industrial/mechanical work environment will be scarcely more at risk wearing a titanium ring than any other kind of ring.

The situation changes and becomes risky when it pertains to people who work with machinery, heavy equipment, on construction sites or in any number of industries where a ring is ill advised and in many cases a danger on a regular basis.

There are simply some jobs where it is not at all advisable to wear jewelry, especially rings, be they gold, silver or platinum wedding bands or aircraft grade titanium cable rings.

Save Your Rings for Special Occasions

The danger of having a ring crushed or caught in machinery is not increased by the ring being titanium, it is the inability to cut off the ring that makes it dangerous, or the fact that a titanium ring is so strong it will not break or snap if subjected to pressure or caught in some way.

The conclusion is this: DO NOT wear any kind of ring at all, titanium or other metal, while working in a high risk environment or operating equipment or if you are frequently in a situation where there is a danger of your ring being caught or your finger being crushed. Save your rings for special occasions, dinners, parties, and outings. If you work in an office environment, and up until now have worn rings without fear of them needing to be cut off, then I’d say you probably shouldn’t worry about your ring being aircraft grade titanium or pure commercial grade titanium or gold or silver or platinum. If you plan to wear your wedding ring everyday on a construction site or an oil rig or operating heavy equipment, then safety should be your first priority: either don’t wear a ring or choose one that can be removed easily in an emergency.

Before indulging in shopping and selecting titanium rings that will suit your lifestyle, or as a gift for a loved one, it’s essential to understand and appreciate the value of titanium jewelry and the long difficult journey it as taken to arrive on a finger.

The Difficulty of Creating Unique Titanium Jewelry

Goldsmiths, silversmiths and expert jewelers have a long history and tradition of goldsmithing and silversmithing; of heating, casting, cutting, shaping and forming precious metals to design unique jewelry in their shops, by hand or with the adequate equipment of the trade, that has changed with technology, but still holds true to basic jeweler’s techniques.

However, titanium master ring and jewelry designers must work on a completely different playing field because they must utilize techniques that have nothing in common with how jewelry is usually made. This is because titanium is hard and not flexible or malleable like gold or silver. Add to that the variety of alloy combinations, each with hardness dictated by the amount of oxygen, whereby one alloy combination may be easy to shape and simultaneously difficult to cut, or vice versa.

The Complex Technology Behind Titanium Rings Men Love

With a tolerance for heat over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit before melting, and a sensitivity to such heat that causes it to be reactive (and therefore change color), and with a high liquid to solid ratio making casting a complicated procedure, to say nothing of it having to be done in a vacuum, the manufacturing and creating of titanium jewelry is a very technical and multifaceted process that does not resemble traditional jeweler’s procedures at all.

Although the cutting of titanium rings is done similar to how other jewelry is cut, namely it is stamped, drilled and even sawed, all must be done with special tools intended for the hardness of titanium.

Engraved titanium rings are also done on special machines or with lasers.

Titanium Ring Resizing

Once a titanium ring has been finished, resizing is not the same procedure used for resizing gold or silver or platinum rings, in fact it is almost as much work to resize (more than a half size up or down) as it is to remake the ring, and therefore it is not normally done. It is very important to order the right size titanium ring (or tungsten ring) from the start.

Although resizing titanium rings is sometimes offered as a service from some outlets, please be aware that this may not be the standard ring resizing you are expecting, where a ring is cut, reheated and sized larger or smaller by adding or subtracting metal.

In the case of titanium, resizing will probably mean a change of no more than a half size larger, using a sort of stretching procedure that is based on titanium’s ductile property, while resizing a half size smaller will be achieved by adding a kind of wire insert that may or may not be comfortable to the wearer.

The Colors of Edward Mirell’s Titanium Rings

Edward Mirell has a gorgeous line of colored titanium jewelry and rings, which brings up the question of how titanium ring colors are achieved. Coloring titanium rings is not about bathing, dipping, coating or plating (at least not for high quality rings) but rather is a complex process called anodizing electrolytically whereby the color of titanium is altered at a molecular level.

After reading Mr. Edward Rosenberg’s comprehensive description of how this is accomplished, I am in no position to attempt to re-explain it, but am even more in awe of the talented technicians and titanium craftspeople who achieve the vibrant colors on blue titanium rings and pink and purple and green pieces that are truly exquisite works of metal art.

The best womens titanium rings and jewelry styles I can find by Edward Mirell would be in the Deco and the South Beach Collection or the Edward Mirell Rainbow Collection launched in mid 2009 which is selling through Ron Yates (Yates & Co. Jewelers), and his online outlet called Titanium-Jewelry that operates out of Modesto California and carries most of the Edward Mirell brand name pieces.

Although I’m not sure if the South Beach and the Rainbow collections carry some of the same items, there are outstanding pieces like the Rainbow Sapphire Black Ti Ring, peppered with bezel set multicolor sapphires that can also be ordered in natural grey-white titanium or the Black Ti version. There is also a matching Rainbow Sapphire Titanium Heart Necklace and the complimenting earrings that have authentic colored sapphires perfect for the ladies.

Rainbow Collection for Young Ladies

Although the Edward Mirell Rainbow Collection is gorgeous, it has a feel of being more for young ladies than for the woman who will be on the arm of the man who wears the elegant men’s jewelry styles.

However, there are some designs that could double as avant-garde wedding band options, perhaps for a young couple since they are everything but traditional.

Overlapping Product Lines

Since the creation of titanium jewelry is not a simple process that can easily be done in small jewelry shops (because of requiring expensive high-tech equipment and technical personnel), many jewelry designers, manufacturers, dealers or shops that sell online (and offer the best titanium rings and jewelry products), will overlap product lines and designer collections because they come from the same sources, most notably the Spectore Corporation. … Rings and a Hammer

Let’s say there are three rings: one is titanium, one is tungsten, another is tungsten carbide. Now each gets hit with a massive hammer blow. The titanium ring will not break but will bend out of shape because it’s flexible or ductile and may be able to withstand up to 180,000 psi before breaking. Tungsten, and tungsten carbide rings will shatter because they are dense and brittle. So in theory, if shaterability equals safety, then a tungsten carbide ring would have to be the least likely to remain in tact and therefore the least dangerous.

The Most Hypoallergenic Jewelry

If you are searching for the most hypoallergenic jewelry possible amongst the three choices, titanium, tungsten and tungsten carbide, because you have sensitive skin that reacts to many kinds of jewelry containing nickel, then pure titanium will be the best choice because not only nickel but also cobalt causes allergic reactions and tungsten carbide jewelry may have cobalt.

A note about cobalt: cobalt tends to mix with natural skin oil and create oxidation. This means it will look tarnished and will not be able to be cleaned or scrubbed or polished away. If you are wanting a tungsten carbide ring then try to buy ones that use nickel binding and not cobalt. Oddly enough, although nickel is what causes most allergic reactions, when mixed with tungsten carbide it is rendered inert and therefore hypoallergenic.
