Titanium Jewelry – Top 10 Stores for Unique Titanium Rings

This article will present the most unique titanium rings available on the market and provide a list of the top 10 titanium jewelry designers, manufactures, dealers and online retail shops, but first….

…I’m waiting to board my flight, in the Hong Kong airport (departures west hall, level 6, restricted area) and the available activities include sipping tea or coffee, shopping for Duty Free, or at least trying on the latest perfumes, feigning I’m in the market for jewelry from Cartier, Links of London, Swarovski, Tiffany & Co or some exclusive Lukefook Jewellery, engaging myself in pretending to read Chinese fashion magazines versus actually reading Michel Houellebecq (that’s on the top of my carryon) or…people watching. My choice: people watching. I might as well lap up Hong Kong fashion juice while I can!

The Fashionable Catwalks of Airport Corridors

edward-mirell-wellington0002cr

Ahhhh….yes….fashion, accessories and jewelry on the real life male models who unwittingly walk the catwalks of airport corridors. There they are, successful Hong Kong businessmen sporting a mix of casual attire and suits, with practical briefcases in one hand and dainty paper bags with designer logos in the other; in and out of glistening shops: Giorgio Armani , Gucci, Hermes, Hugo Boss, Prada, Ralf Lauren, Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo (yes they’re all on level 6)…stopping to buy luxury jewellery gifts form David Yurman and IWC Schaffhausen …but wait…

…What Jewelry are the Men Wearing?

A032A-L

I watch as men’s wrists move, and fingers reach into wallets or pull out money clips and pay for their chosen gifts. It’s obvious. While they’re buying gold, platinum, silver, gemstones or diamonds for their ladies, they themselves wear titanium rings, watches and titanium bracelets. How can I tell?

Recognizing Titanium Rings and Jewelry

edward-mirell-chain-titanium-necklace

Titanium is a grey-white metal that is made into distinctive steely jewelry, different from sterling silver or white gold (although it may be crafted so as to appear similar to the rich grey tones of platinum), but it’s usually less lustrously polished than platinum, to say nothing of the fact that top titanium jewelry designers often have signature styles that are recognizable, square, domed, brushed, or the famous titanium cable rings.

Titanium Jewelry Wearers – A Different Species of Men

edward mirell link collection

Titanium rings (and titanium men’s jewelry as a whole) has an air of distinction, of success, masculine boldness and casual elegance. The minimalist sleek designs are perfectly suited for confident men who know understated is not equal to ordinary, and tensile is not about hardness alone but strength with flexibility. Men who wear gold are a different species from the men who choose titanium rings.

And that’s just one little conclusion I jump to while people watching waiting for my flight…(Maybe I can do the same in London, then re-evaluate my findings.)

A Hong Kong Gold Dealer who wears Titanium

I finally board the plane and find my seat beside a gregarious Chinese gentleman (casually attired in designer jeans, an Armani jacket over a white t-shirt, accented by a loosely knotted silk scarf, and on his fingers are three unusual rings, and a grey-white link bracelet on his wrist). I naturally ask him about his titanium. He laughs, not only wondering how I know what metal his jewelry is made from, but pleasantly surprised since he’s a Hong Kong jeweler on route to do business in London. His name is Mr. Chen. Although Mr. Chen is a gold and gemstone dealer he says he always chooses titanium jewelry for himself. Why? He laughs again. It’s strong as steel yet lightweight, scratches less than gold, is hypoallergenic, doesn’t easily bend out of shape and comes in modern designs.

He Speaks, I Take Notes and Nod

edward mirell Titanium Collection

Mr. Chen loves Edward Mirell titanium jewelry ( a brand of the Spectore Corporation that uses grey titanium that’s over 99% pure, which is really surprising since Mr. Chen explains that for example a 14kt gold ring is less than 60% gold), and he wishes Tonino Lamborghini had a larger ring selection of rings because he already has the best three, and talks about Titanium Rings Studio, Cascadia Design Studio, another small company known as Artifact, and naturally mentions Titanium Kay as an online retailer.

He says there’s a unique titanium rings supplier in Hawaii he sometimes orders from, and gives me a list of jewelers that make quality, unusual designs and says most of them sell their products online too, which reminds him, he needs to update his gold jewelry website…and yes I fail to put periods in this paragraph because Mr. Chen doesn’t stop long enough to take a breath, but as he speaks, I take notes and nod, and when many hours later we arrive at Heathrow airport, Mr. Chen departs to make jewelry deals in London and I depart to catch another flight to Warsaw to meet my husband, pack his things and move to…. Spain.

What’s all the fuss over titanium rings really about?

Now at last, settled in Andalucía, I finally have time to write about the top 10 Jewelry stores that have the world’s best titanium rings …oh….but first, you might be asking yourself, what’s the allure of titanium? Is it considered a precious metal or an industrial one? Is it really used to make airplanes and replace human bones? What’s all the fuss over titanium rings really about?

The Allure of Titanium and its Many Uses

Titanium is not considered a precious metal, rather an industrial or commercial one with aesthetic applications like: jewelry. It’s not “precious” because it’s not rare or scarce; it’s a metal that’s plentiful on earth and also found in meteorites, the sun, the moon and certain stars. It’s believed that titanium exists on earth due to a supernova explosion, perhaps billions of years ago, that literally left titanium stardust.

N254N

Besides the appeal of wearing a ring that’s made of “stardust”, titanium’s allure is obvious when you consider it’s none-corrosive, resistant to saltwater and chlorine, impervious to most acids, gases and chemicals, is nonmagnetic, is inert and therefore hypoallergenic, almost as strong as steel but half as heavy, and can be alloyed to have a tensile strength of as much as 180,000 pounds per square inch.

Colored Titanium Jewelry?

Although titanium is grey-white in its natural state, it is a refractory metal, which means that its oxides are refractive, so that during an electrolytic heat treatment called anodizing, titanium oxide will react with heat and refract causing a spectral color effect, which is how blue titanium rings (and other colored titanium jewelry) are made. (It is the same principal that allows for the making of the famous black titanium rings as well.)

The Kroll Process

titanium Kroll Process diagram

Although titanium has been on earth for billions of years, it’s a relatively new metal on the commercial market, since the process of refining the metallic oxide element from where it’s found in certain types of iron ore, rutile ore, titanite, ilmenite and other minerals, is extremely complex and has only been a commercially viable operation in about the last half century – since the mid 1940’s when William Kroll produced titanium by an innovative method that is still the most common one used today: the Kroll Process. This method of retrieving the metallic element of titanium from the base ore is so complex that it has taken modern technology, and a plethora of experts, decades of research and through trial and error to arrive at a means to extract and process titanium in a manner that is even remotely cost efficient.

Titanium processing methods continue to develop on a quest for better and cheaper processing, but to this day, the price of titanium is almost entirely based on it’s difficulty to refine, which requires expensive high-tech equipment that can withstand temperatures of over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit and are vacuum sealed to prevent reactions with oxygen. The process is done in four basic stages:

    edward mirell signature cable
  • Reduction of titanium ore into sponge
  • Melting of sponge to form ingots
  • Forming of billets / bars / sheets / pipes

  • Fabrication into industrial or artistic forms

Aerospace, Architecture and Medicine

Pegasus

One of the first commercial uses of titanium was by the US Department of Defense in the aerospace program for such things as jet fighters, jet engines, missiles, tanks, ships, submarines, firewalls, fuselages, landing-gear, hydraulic tubing and disc brakes. The Apollo, Gemini and Mercury space capsules were made mostly of titanium, and space shuttles have components of this strong, light metal.

Bilbao Guggenheim Museum titanium

Titanium has expanded into being an essential metal for architecture, like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao Spain (the largest titanium covered building in the world completed 50 years ago), the Frederic C. Hamilton Building in Denver, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca (completed in1993), and the Monument to the Conquerors of Space in Moscow.

It is used as well in the making golf clubs, bicycles, tennis rackets, computer cases, watches, eyeglass frames, dental castings and medical implants like: bone, cartilage, hips, joints and heart valve replacements, and is also used in pace makers, wheelchairs and surgical instruments.

Titanium 6.4 is aircraft grade titanium with a tensile strength of 150,000 pounds per square inch, and extra hard titanium is 6.6.2 with a tensile strength of 180,000 psi.

But we’re talking about titanium jewelry, what does it matter if it’s used for airplanes, heart valves and buildings?

Titanium-Mesh-Mens-Band-Ring

It matters because the properties that make titanium strong and light for an airplane make it strong and light on your finger or wrist; and the biocompatibility that allows it to be used to replace a heart valve is why it won’t make you get an itchy allergic rash on your skin; and the reason it’s used in submarines is the same reason your titanium ring won’t oxidize when you swim in the sea or in chlorinated pools; and the fact that it’s resistant to most acids and chemicals makes it easy to clean and not prone to tarnishing like silver; and it’s tensile strength, which is enough for supporting buildings, is what makes a titanium ring not be hard without being brittle and less prone to getting scratched or dented like gold or precious metals, and that’s why it makes great disc brakes and landing gear and also modern mens rings!

Titanium’s Added Allure for Men

Titanium has an added allure for men, and that is it’s manliness; it’s industrial none-jewelry related nature lends to it a physiological connotation of epitomizing strength and practical masculinity – and that’s titanium’s allure when it comes to men’s jewelry.

Not Just Another Jewelry cliché

Titanium 8mm Gents Band Ring

Since titanium jewelry arrived on the market just over 20 years ago, it tends to be characterized by the sleekness of its contemporary designs that are not traditional or retro or based on old jewelry clichés (or forged from a metal that brings to mind ladies diamond rings or fairytale treasure chest), but clean and unfussy, chic modern jewelry exclusively designed for men. It’s possible that if titanium had been able to be processed earlier in history, it may have become the standard for jewelry – not gold, silver or platinum.

Though there are women’s titanium rings and ladies titanium jewelry (like titanium engagement rings with diamonds, and many styles of ladies titanium wedding rings), it’s still safe to say that (if we’re going to separate metals into masculine and feminine) titanium is certainly a masculine metal.

Black Titanium Rings

Black Titanium Band with Grey Titanium Edge

As previously stated, there are complex heat treatments (using an electrolytic procedure called anodizing) to which titanium can be subjected in order to change it’s color from grey-white to colors and even to pure black, creating a whole gamut of black titanium ring* styles that are very suited to men. Black titanium rings for men come in a wide variety of qualities – not all are the same. Remember: titanium is NOT black. All black rings have been treated in one way or another. How deep they are treated will dictate the quality of the ring.

*A note about black titanium rings:

They are gorgeous and available in lots of high quality styles, (and I will shortly recommend some) but a black titanium ring or a blue titanium ring is not exactly the same as a grayish-white one in terms of being scratch resistant for which titanium has become famous.

edward mirell black titanium

Low quality heat treated men’s titanium rings may only be black on the surface (or at best part way through the top layer of metal), and therefore if scratched may lose their blackness or become scruffy looking over time.

If you’re going for a black titanium wedding ring DO NOT be tempted into buying cheap titanium rings because you will be very disappointed when a couple months after your wedding, what you thought to be an indestructible, un-scratch-able titanium ring turns out to be a scratched up mess.

Spend the money and get a high quality black titanium wedding ring that has been treated to become black (or blue or whatever color) at least halfway through the thickness of the band (or go for a titanium ring that is the natural grayish color or a titanium gold ring blend.

Who are the BEST Titanium Jewelers, Designers and Manufacturers?

This list of the best designers, manufactures and distributors of mens titanium rings, titanium bracelets, cufflinks, mens titanium wedding rings and ladies titanium engagement ring styles, is by no means comprehensive. It is just the top 10 that have been recommended to me and I have investigated. As there are also many fine gold, silver platinum, diamond and gemstone jewelers and dealers, there are also many high quality titanium ring designers and dealers who may well belong on a top 50 or 100 list. For simplicity, I have selected 10 jewelers who reflect a blend of the most unique designs with the best possible quality and the most variety to choose from and offer their designs for sale online.

Titanium Rings for Men & Women

edward mirell texture

Although titanium jewelers tend to specialize in titanium rings for men, I have included the top items in titanium rings for women, titanium wedding ring options for both men and women including some unique black titanium wedding bands; a few ideas for custom titanium rings and styles that can serve as titanium promise rings.

There are also titanium gold rings that mix two or three metals (sometimes with diamonds or other gemstones), and some choice tungsten wedding bands and tungsten carbide jewelry pieces as well as a few specific carbon fiber pieces, a few titanium necklace designs and titanium earrings that are great for ladies who are allergic to other metals. However, I’ve primarily compiled a list of the best titanium wedding band options for men.

The top 10 companies are:

  1. Edward Mirell – Spectore Corporation

  2. Yates & Co. Jewelers – Titanium Jewelry
  3. Cascadia Design Studio – Custom Rings
  4. Titanium Rings Studio – Ti Rings
  5. Avant-Garde Co. – Titanium Style
  6. Titanium Kay – Titanium Gift Shop
  7. Arnell Workshop Inc. – Titanium Rings
  8. Titanium Era – Avalon Diamonds & Jewelry
  9. Artifact – Custom Titanium Jewelry Crafters
  10. Hawaii Titanium Rings – Tropical & Wood

Exclusive Men’s Titanium Ring Designs

by Edward Mirell – Spectore Corporation
R281N-SV

Mens titanium ring designer extraordinaire, Edward Rosenberg (and Mirella Connor), and the Spectore Corporation, offer a series of collections of men’s jewelry, distinctive titanium bracelets for men, titanium necklaces, unique titanium cable ring styles, high quality mens black titanium rings, wedding bands, womens titanium rings and blends of metals, styles and colors, including gemstone and diamond creations, all set into the best quality titanium on the market today, under the brand name Edward Mirell.

Does Edward Mirell have Aircraft Grade Titanium?

Edward Rosenberg states that the World Titanium Council does NOT endorse aircraft grade titanium for rings and therefore the Edward Mirell collections do not use titanium alloyed with aluminum, vanadium and tin due to the hardness of the metal, despite the fact that many of his competitors do use aircraft grade titanium for their rings. The Edward Mirell brand of titanium jewelry has taken this “no aircraft grade” stance in part due to safety concerns and also because pure titanium is better to work with and easier to be able to engrave rings.
99% Pure Titanium

edward mirell spectore corporation

All Edward Mirell titanium jewelry is commercially pure approved by the World Titanium Council. The decision for such a renowned titanium designer to NOT use aircraft grade titanium for his jewelry, brings up the concern of titanium ring safety.

First, I must point out that Edward Rosenberg (a third generation jeweler) is both the President and Chairman of the Board of Spectore Corporation and of the World Titanium Council, and virtually pioneered the use of titanium in jewelry back in 1982 when he debuted his line at the JA show in New York.

Today, Spectore continues to be the leading titanium developer and manufacturer of aesthetic or art titanium and is considered a top designer of exclusive high quality titanium jewelry under the Edward Mirell label, and therefore what Mr. Rosenberg has decided about aircraft grade titanium rings must not be taken lightly.

Are Aircraft Grade Titanium Rings Really Dangerous? What are the Risks?

titanium ring cutter

If the hardest titanium alloy, aircraft grade, is used in a ring and then requires removing (by cutting) in an emergency, it is true that it will not be so easily cut as a gold or silver band. To cut a titanium ring requires special titanium cutters, which some paramedics and hospitals are equipped with (but not all), and therefore could present the danger of losing a finger.

Consider Your Work Environment – Is Wearing A Ring Advisable?

This danger should in no way be taken lightly, however, I wish to point out that aside from extremely bizarre accidents most people who normally wear rings everyday in an office or none industrial/mechanical work environment will be scarcely more at risk wearing a titanium ring than any other kind of ring.

hand hazard

The situation changes and becomes risky when it pertains to people who work with machinery, heavy equipment, on construction sites or in any number of industries where a ring is ill advised and in many cases a danger on a regular basis.

There are simply some jobs where it is not at all advisable to wear jewelry, especially rings, be they gold, silver or platinum wedding bands or aircraft grade titanium cable rings.

Save Your Rings for Special Occasions

edward mirell stone titanium rings

The danger of having a ring crushed or caught in machinery is not increased by the ring being titanium, it is the inability to cut off the ring that makes it dangerous, or the fact that a titanium ring is so strong it will not break or snap if subjected to pressure or caught in some way.

The conclusion is this: DO NOT wear any kind of ring at all, titanium or other metal, while working in a high risk environment or operating equipment or if you are frequently in a situation where there is a danger of your ring being caught or your finger being crushed. Save your rings for special occasions, dinners, parties, and outings. If you work in an office environment, and up until now have worn rings without fear of them needing to be cut off, then I’d say you probably shouldn’t worry about your ring being aircraft grade titanium or pure commercial grade titanium or gold or silver or platinum. If you plan to wear your wedding ring everyday on a construction site or an oil rig or operating heavy equipment, then safety should be your first priority: either don’t wear a ring or choose one that can be removed easily in an emergency.

Before indulging in shopping and selecting titanium rings that will suit your lifestyle, or as a gift for a loved one, it’s essential to understand and appreciate the value of titanium jewelry and the long difficult journey it as taken to arrive on a finger.

The Difficulty of Creating Unique Titanium Jewelry

Goldsmiths, silversmiths and expert jewelers have a long history and tradition of goldsmithing and silversmithing; of heating, casting, cutting, shaping and forming precious metals to design unique jewelry in their shops, by hand or with the adequate equipment of the trade, that has changed with technology, but still holds true to basic jeweler’s techniques.

SPARTAN Titanium 9mm Mens Band Ring

However, titanium master ring and jewelry designers must work on a completely different playing field because they must utilize techniques that have nothing in common with how jewelry is usually made. This is because titanium is hard and not flexible or malleable like gold or silver. Add to that the variety of alloy combinations, each with hardness dictated by the amount of oxygen, whereby one alloy combination may be easy to shape and simultaneously difficult to cut, or vice versa.

The Complex Technology Behind Titanium Rings Men Love

liquid metal

With a tolerance for heat over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit before melting, and a sensitivity to such heat that causes it to be reactive (and therefore change color), and with a high liquid to solid ratio making casting a complicated procedure, to say nothing of it having to be done in a vacuum, the manufacturing and creating of titanium jewelry is a very technical and multifaceted process that does not resemble traditional jeweler’s procedures at all.

Although the cutting of titanium rings is done similar to how other jewelry is cut, namely it is stamped, drilled and even sawed, all must be done with special tools intended for the hardness of titanium.

Engraved titanium rings are also done on special machines or with lasers.

Titanium Ring Resizing

Once a titanium ring has been finished, resizing is not the same procedure used for resizing gold or silver or platinum rings, in fact it is almost as much work to resize (more than a half size up or down) as it is to remake the ring, and therefore it is not normally done. It is very important to order the right size titanium ring (or tungsten ring) from the start.

ring titanium

Although resizing titanium rings is sometimes offered as a service from some outlets, please be aware that this may not be the standard ring resizing you are expecting, where a ring is cut, reheated and sized larger or smaller by adding or subtracting metal.

In the case of titanium, resizing will probably mean a change of no more than a half size larger, using a sort of stretching procedure that is based on titanium’s ductile property, while resizing a half size smaller will be achieved by adding a kind of wire insert that may or may not be comfortable to the wearer.

The Colors of Edward Mirell’s Titanium Rings

Edward Mirell has a gorgeous line of colored titanium jewelry and rings, which brings up the question of how titanium ring colors are achieved. Coloring titanium rings is not about bathing, dipping, coating or plating (at least not for high quality rings) but rather is a complex process called anodizing electrolytically whereby the color of titanium is altered at a molecular level.

edward mirell radiance

After reading Mr. Edward Rosenberg’s comprehensive description of how this is accomplished, I am in no position to attempt to re-explain it, but am even more in awe of the talented technicians and titanium craftspeople who achieve the vibrant colors on blue titanium rings and pink and purple and green pieces that are truly exquisite works of metal art.

For more detailed information on the process of anodizing titanium please read the article Titanium: The Jewelry Industry’s Newest Noble Element, written by Edward Rosenberg.

I will present some colorful titanium ring suggestions further on in this article.

Edward Mirell Titanium Ring Collections

The Edward Mirell collections include the following:

Titanium Men’s Rings

edward mirell trio

Texture – contemporary titanium men ring styles incorporating classic leather in rings and exclusive high-tech titanium bracelets.

Trio
– is a collection of rings and jewelry, including distinctive key rings and cufflinks that blend three metals to form three colors (silver, black and grey) on each piece that also has three raised rails as a signature mark of this unique line of titanium jewelry.

Tuxedo – this collection is classic, elegant, sleek and polished and also incorporates three colors of metal in a subtle blend of hues within each piece.

The name is apt, since the titanium rings, cufflinks and mens titanium bracelets in this series of jewelry are perfect for wearing with a tuxedo.

titanium trio

Cable 2 – these titanium rings and bracelets are notch above the well known titanium cable rings on the market today. Black memory cable is woven around titanium bands, or through intricate bracelet designs. These are also available with sterling silver or 14K gold cable instead of black.
edward mirell exotic metals

Mediterranean – this is a gorgeous collection of intricately crafted jewelry with textured silver, black polished titanium and black sapphires, including cufflinks and passionate pendants that well deserve the name Mediterranean. It is a lustrous, elegant, exotic line of mens jewelry.

edward mirell triple dome

Triple Dome – dome shaped, polished black titanium rings for men and other select jewelry pieces like pendants, all with 3 domes that go around the bands (or titanium pendants) like fluid grooves or rounded mounds of black sand.

There are dozens of domed man titanium ring styles in many shops, but this series takes the dome to a triple level of timelessness.

Racer – black titanium bands with a sterling silver racing stripe down the center; a collection that caters to men who understand speed; who are as comfortable at a black tie event as behind the driver’s seat, in the cockpit of a private jet, or on a speedboat.

Cable Sport – a streamline collection of rings and titanium bracelets and wrist cuffs that have the distinctive black/gold/silver cable woven through the grey-white metal. And although it’s a clean sporty jewelry collection, each piece also has two subtly embedded black diamonds to make the jewelry just elegant enough for evening wear.

Edward Mirell Contemporary Metals Collection

edward-mirell-exotic-metals

Black Ti ™ – This collection uses a patented titanium alloy that has been expertly treated with heat and oxygenation to create high quality black titanium rings that will not chip, scratch or peel because the black is not a superficial treatment (like many cheap black titanium rings) because it is not plated or an enamel coated but rather titanium altered at a molecular level, causing the black to penetrate beneath the surface into the titanium band itself.

The Edward Mirell Black Ti titanium mens rings are stronger, harder and even more durable than the grey-white ones without giving up the light weight quality for which titanium is renewed.

Memory Cable – the memory cable used in Edward Mirell bracelets and titanium cable rings designs is a titanium alloy formed at high temperatures. It’s of high quality and durability, and is black from been subjected to the same molecular alteration as Black Ti.

edward mirell cobaBlu cobalt

CobaBlu ™ Cobalt – This is a patented titanium that is a clean steely white color and is biocompatible and hypoallergenic having first been used in medical applications.

It is hard and polishes to a mirror-like shine mimicking platinum.

Civico.111 Black Sapphire
– the name says it all. It is black brilliantly polished satin finished (by hand) jewelry that is remarkably resistant to scratching. This collection of rings is perhaps one of the most unique innovations in ring creation since each piece is in fact a jewel. Black Sapphire is laboratory grown Corundum, the same as what makes natural sapphires; developed around a specific shape to end up with a ring that is a lab created sapphire jewel.

Timoku ™ – with an appearance of metallic wood-grain, this collection has seamlessly blended Japanese Mokume Gane ( ??? ), a 17th-century Japanese style of using contrasting laminate layers of mixed metals for sword fittings and decorative designs (resembling the original Guri Bori; a type of carved Japanese lacquer work), with the technology of titanium’s heat reactivity. The end result is a matchless collection of domed titanium bands that exude a touch of bamboo or sage green in fluid bands as if emanating from the heart of a tree.

Edward Mirrel Womens Titanium Rings

edward mirell deco collection

Edward Mirell Bridal and Mirella Titanium Women’s Collection, which are advertised – do not appear to be available yet. The best womens titanium rings and jewelry styles I can find by Edward Mirell would be in the Deco and the South Beach Collection or the Edward Mirell Rainbow Collection launched in mid 2009 which is selling through Ron Yates (Yates & Co. Jewelers), and his online outlet called Titanium-Jewelry that operates out of Modesto California and carries most of the Edward Mirell brand name pieces.

edward-mirell-South-Beach

Although I’m not sure if the South Beach and the Rainbow collections carry some of the same items, there are outstanding pieces like the Rainbow Sapphire Black Ti Ring, peppered with bezel set multicolor sapphires that can also be ordered in natural grey-white titanium or the Black Ti version. There is also a matching Rainbow Sapphire Titanium Heart Necklace and the complimenting earrings that have authentic colored sapphires perfect for the ladies.

Rainbow Collection for Young Ladies

edward-mirell-South-Beach-ring

Although the Edward Mirell Rainbow Collection is gorgeous, it has a feel of being more for young ladies than for the woman who will be on the arm of the man who wears the elegant men’s jewelry styles.

However, there are some designs that could double as avant-garde wedding band options, perhaps for a young couple since they are everything but traditional.

Overlapping Product Lines

Since the creation of titanium jewelry is not a simple process that can easily be done in small jewelry shops (because of requiring expensive high-tech equipment and technical personnel), many jewelry designers, manufacturers, dealers or shops that sell online (and offer the best titanium rings and jewelry products), will overlap product lines and designer collections because they come from the same sources, most notably the Spectore Corporation. Many of the top jewelry shops carry the Edward Mirell collections or advertise the use of the Spectore grey (99% pure titanium).

JR-YATES-BANNER

One such company is Yates & Co. Jewelers who operate online under Titanium-Jewelry.com and are all about creative jewelry titanium resources, high end men rings, watches, key rings, cufflinks and gorgeous designer titanium bracelets.

Yates & Co. Jewelers – Titanium Jewelry

The online version of Yates & Co. Jewelers states that they have a physical jewelry shop in Modesto, California as well as the online shop which carries a substantial collection of titanium and tungsten jewelry, and have been operating since 1988. It is a family run jewelry business directed by Mr. Ron Yates who is charge of designing and selecting titanium and tungsten ring collections, while Mechelle Yates, a gemologist, handles buying diamonds and gemstones.

Their selection of men’s wedding rings is one of the largest online and includes many of the top designer rings and jewelry. They have recently launched the Iconic line of, primarily, tungsten carbide mens rings by J. R. Yates. However Titanium-Jewelry carries many other lines like ArtCarved, Benchmark, Coge, Diana Classic, Formotion Watches, Triton and Orange County Choppers. They also carry most (if not all) of the Edward Mirell (EM) designer rings, like:

EM Lattice Collection is a more ornate titanium ring design that has gold lattice inlays that make excellent wedding rings for men because of the delicate chain latticework in yellow gold, rose gold and small diamonds. Very elegant, yet with the chains looks totally masculine.

EM Steel Collection is about pendants and key chains with fiberglass inlays that do not appear to have matching mens rings or bracelets. Since men jewelry options are more limited than women’s, key rings, key chains, money clips and cufflinks are included in most mens jewelry lines.

edward-mirell-bracelets

Edward Mirell Rainbow Jewelry Collection featuring titanium bands with a colorful striped groove, diamonds and even colorful sapphires in white-grey or black titanium rings. Also titanium hoop earrings and titanium necklace in heart and rectangular shapes studded with small gemstones. Orange County Choppers Titanium Ring Collection

(Real Mens Titanium Jewelry)
OCC-Titanium-Silver-Striped-Ring

Titanium-Jewelry also offers a line of biker titanium rings and tungsten rings in unique designs by Orange County Choppers (OCC), whose founder is Paul Teutul, Sr. and who also uses the Spectore Corporation titanium to create his unusual line of mens rings.

For a certain kind of gentleman, these jewelry pieces could double as exceptional titanium wedding bands, especially for the man who likes to take to the road with the wind in his hair (well…at least whatever hair flies out from under his helmet).

Triton Tungsten Jewellery

TRITON Alto tungsten wedding band

Titanium-Jewelry also promotes Triton tungsten wedding bands, featuring the two most popular designs namely: the ALTO mens ring and the WAVE tungsten wedding bands, two of the hardest metal rings on the market.

Tungsten jewellery (tungsten also known as wolfram or volfram) is as popular as titanium. It’s a very strong metal, with a melting point of 6,192 degrees Fahrenheit, used in light bulb filaments and heating elements and coils, and being the base for very funky mens titanium wedding band designs!

Titanium Celtic Rings

citadel tungsten ring by ArtCarved

Although Titanium-Jewelry doesn’t seem to have a Celtic TITANIUM ring they do have a very unique ring called the Citadel Engraved Tungsten Ring which has a distinctive Celtic etching covering the entire tungsten band and would make a lovely wedding ring. This piece is from the famous ArtCarved tungsten jewelry collection.

Engraved Titanium Rings and Tungsten Rings

For those who are searching for an elusive engraved titanium ring these are difficult to come by, but Titanium-Jewelry has the Martyn Tungsten Ring by DIANA® which is a laser-engraved men’s wedding band that has a delicate pattern engraved all around the band. They have two or three other engraved rings, but most in Tungsten. Tungsten jewelry like the Ravin tungsten ring by Benchmark is also available through Titanium-Jewelry.

Tungsten Carbide Watches

Yates & Co. Jewelers/Titanium-Jewelry.com also have a select few high quality tungsten carbide watch styles, like the Black Chronograph watch by Swiss Tungsten. Tungsten carbide is inorganic; in fact it’s a chemical compound of tungsten and carbon as the name suggests. Tungsten carbide is less flexible than steel and denser than titanium making it close to corundum or what we commonly know as sapphire. It’s so hard (and brittle) it can only be polished with diamonds.

Custom Engraved Titanium Ring or Tungsten Ring

If you are searching for a custom engraved titanium ring, for example to etch a name or a date or a phrase inside titanium, tungsten or palladium wedding rings, you will not be able to get that done though the Titanium-Jewelry website of Mr. Ron Yates. You will have to seek an engraver in your area after purchasing the ring and ensuring the size is exactly right (and that you will not need to return it or for any reason or take advantage of their return policy guarantee).

Fine Engraving

engraving scripts

When you take the men’s ring engraving to a local jeweler or titanium engraving center, you should try to select less fancy fonts; keep it simple because etching into titanium is difficult enough without scrolled or curved lettering.

The engraving on titanium or on tungsten mens rings will appear to be less deep than what you may have seen on other metals, but it’s not a problem, a thin etch will last just as long because titanium and tungsten do not “wear out” through rubbing against your finger like gold rings, white gold rings or silver rings. Also try to get your rings laser engraved, the results are much smoother than with diamond engravers and some cursive fonts are possible and turn out much better.

Bridal Rings & Palladium Bands

his and hers grooved palladium bands

Yates & Co. Jewelers, at least their Titanium-Jewelry online jewelry shop, does not cater to many ladies rings or bridal rings or wedding ring sets, however, for simple clean matching His & Hers bands, they do have the Grooved Palladium Bands, which are a gorgeous palladium wedding band set by the bridal jewelry designer, Diana Classic. The two matching rings cost just over $1,000.

his and hers black titanium and platinum bands

There’s also another His & Hers wedding bands, which are a mix of black titanium and platinum. Absolutely elegant and one of a kind. Both bands together cost about $1,200.

The simplest His & Hers palladium wedding bands are a set of 7mm Flat rings, with a satin finish; clean, simple, classy for about $1,300.

rainbow sapphire ti ring wedding band

Another option for unique bridal rings could include the Rainbow Sapphire Ti Ring by Edward Mirell, which is a striking 6 mm wide white titanium band with scattered multicolored colored sapphires bezel set around the ring in a random modern design. This unique designer bridal ring is just $475! All the stones are genuine.

There is another designer line that sells through Titanium-Jewelry called Artcarved titanium wedding bands; also bridal rings for him and her. The three designs are:

  • Blackburn by ArtCarved – black/grey polished titanium wedding band for $179.

  • Mystique by ArtCarved – black titanium/18K gold grooved wedding band $389.
  • Dorian by ArtCarved – titanium/gold grooved wedding band for $349

Other Titanium Men’s Rings and Ladies Titanium Ring Options

Aside from the bands we all know, like the black titanium rings, the titanium cable rings, the domed rings and the flat titanium rings, there is another type of ring that incorporates gemstones, especially diamonds. These rings are called tension set diamond rings, and they look like a C with the small space at the top having a small diamond squeezed, as it were, into the space. This is done through a process called tension setting.

Here are the top tension set diamond ring styles that are available online at Titanium-Jewelry, and include many styles for the ladies:

  • TRITON® black titanium tension set diamond ring for $439.
  • Ladies black titanium/ diamond tension set ring by Edward Mirell for $299.
  • Edward Mirell black and gray titanium ring with tension set diamond for $479.
  • Diagonal black titanium tension set diamond ring by Edward Mirell under $300.
  • Contoured Titanium Ring with Tension Set Diamond for $499.
  • Grooved Titanium Ring/ tension set diamond by Edward Mirell for under $500.
  • Ladies black titanium and 18K gold ring with tension set diamond for under $500.
  • Titanium ring with 14K yellow gold and tension set diamond for $438.
  • Titanium ring with 14K rose gold and tension set diamond for $438.
  • TRITON® black titanium ring/18K white gold/tension set diamond for $522.
  • Ladies titanium ring/ tension set diamond for just under $250.
edwar mirell tension set bands

All of these titanium rings are corrosion resistant and will not tarnish or react to oxygen or alter their color. They are all hypoallergenic; unlike other alloyed jewelry metals (even gold and silver, and especially white gold rings) they do not contain any nickel.

They are very durable for those who are active sports aficionados, and even for those who swim in chlorinated pools. Chlorine does not affect titanium jewelry. It is also very comfortable to wear because it is very light.

With titanium ring styles that incorporate a little silver, black titanium, rose gold or yellow gold and perhaps diamonds or other gemstones like sapphires, these pieces of jewelry will be versatile to combine with other jewelry in a variety of metals. Some of the anodized titanium rings and jewelry are also easy to match with colorful wardrobes and other pieces of casual fashion jewelry.

Titanium Versus Tungsten and Tungsten Carbide

There are a lot of questions about titanium bands versus tungsten wedding ring strength and durability and even about tungsten carbide and its properties in jewelry. Which ring should you choose?

The answer to that is complex. Since all three are harder than traditional precious jewelry metals. However it is the alloyed metals that are mixed with these base metals that make them stronger or weaker and therefore tungsten carbide will tend to be the hardest metal when compared to pure titanium. The only thing harder than tungsten carbide appears to be diamonds. This becomes a concern when safety questions arise. The problem is that people often ask the wrong questions pertaining to hardness when in fact they should be asking which metal is the most flexible or ductile or has the highest tensile strength. So to try to answer this question let’s talk about…

… Rings and a Hammer

Let’s say there are three rings: one is titanium, one is tungsten, another is tungsten carbide. Now each gets hit with a massive hammer blow. The titanium ring will not break but will bend out of shape because it’s flexible or ductile and may be able to withstand up to 180,000 psi before breaking. Tungsten, and tungsten carbide rings will shatter because they are dense and brittle. So in theory, if shaterability equals safety, then a tungsten carbide ring would have to be the least likely to remain in tact and therefore the least dangerous.

The Most Hypoallergenic Jewelry

Hypoallergenic Jewelry

If you are searching for the most hypoallergenic jewelry possible amongst the three choices, titanium, tungsten and tungsten carbide, because you have sensitive skin that reacts to many kinds of jewelry containing nickel, then pure titanium will be the best choice because not only nickel but also cobalt causes allergic reactions and tungsten carbide jewelry may have cobalt.

A note about cobalt: cobalt tends to mix with natural skin oil and create oxidation. This means it will look tarnished and will not be able to be cleaned or scrubbed or polished away. If you are wanting a tungsten carbide ring then try to buy ones that use nickel binding and not cobalt. Oddly enough, although nickel is what causes most allergic reactions, when mixed with tungsten carbide it is rendered inert and therefore hypoallergenic. Most tungsten carbide rings, if they do not say that they have been made with nickel-binding, are likely bound with cobalt.

Strong and Comfy

6mm Satin Finish Square Titanium Wedding Band Ring

If your main concern is comfort and you’re buying a ring in one of these three metals because you want the lightest one, then pure titanium or titanium alloys will be your best choice. The worst option would be tungsten carbide because it’s almost twice as heavy as stainless steel. Choose a titanium ring with a CP grade of 2 and it will be light, comfortable and good quality.

Tempted by Color?

titanium color chart

If you want the widest color selection you will need to go with titanium or titanium alloys for white and gray and reactive metallic colors and even black. Tungsten carbide is primarily made into black rings not colors.

Cheap Rings that are not all that Cheap

Titanium, tungsten and tungsten carbide rings are not cheap! But if you want the least expensive metal of the three, then titanium (pure or alloyed) will be what you’re after. This is not due to the cost of the metal itself, but the cost of the processing. It is simply more expensive to heat tungsten carbide to its melting point than it is to melt titanium whose melting point is about half that of tungsten carbide.

Why is titanium still almost the same price as gold?
It seems rather expensive for a none precious metal.

Yes, it is expensive, considering our planet is filled with titanium, and its not a scarce or precious commodity like gold but the price is not a reflection of its availability or scarcity, nor has the price been inflated because it is such a popular metal for modern jewelry, rather, the cost of titanium is based on the fact that processing it is extremely expensive, requiring high-tech equipment that can withstand high temperatures and controlled vacuum environments that alter the metal just enough to shape and yet not change its color. It’s very complicated to work with titanium and not at all like forging jewelry from gold, silver or platinum. That’s why it’s expensive!

Indestructible Titanium????

If you believe that your titanium jewelry is indestructible that is not entirely true because that will depend on the purity and/or the alloy. Some titanium is not much stronger than gold, other titanium is stronger than steel. Remember that poorly anodized or enameled versions of black titanium rings will scratch easily and quickly! However, tungsten carbide black rings will never get scratched or worn looking and will never bend out of shape. They will break before they bend, but are often sold with a lifetime guarantee against scratching.

Things to check before buying tungsten or tungsten carbide rings:

  1. Are they guaranteed not to bend?
  2. Do they contain cobalt?
  3. Are the tungsten rings bound with nickel?
  4. Are they hypoallergenic and tarnish free?
  5. Does the tungsten jewelry come with a lifetime guarantee against scratching?
ring sizer
How can I be sure to get the right size titanium ring or tungsten ring since they are so difficult to resize?

Some websites will freely send you a complimentary ring size verifier, and this will be especially useful if the rings you are about to buy are what is called “comfort fit bands” since they tend to fit a little differently than none comfort fit rings. In some cases you will want to choose a half size down if it’s a comfort fit, but you will have to verify that by either testing a few rings in a shop before buying online or having an online shop send you a sizer that will gauge what size you’ll need based on their specific product. Titanium-Jewelry offers a ring sizer free of charge, all you have to do is ask and they’ll send it to you.

Zoppini, Dolan Bullock, Colibri

Titanium Carbon Fiber Inlay Band Ring

Titanium Kay has other lines of fabulous designer titanium jewelry from the likes of ST DuPont, Zoppini, Dolan Bullock, Colibri, and the well known Benchmark. Some of their titanium ring designs incorporate silver, gold, platinum, stainless steel, tungsten, tungsten carbide and even the ultra high-tech innovation: carbon fiber jewelry. Which brings up the fact that you may know about titanium rings, tungsten rings and even tungsten carbide, but…

What is Carbon Fiber Jewelry About?

Carbon fiber isn’t new, but carbon fiber jewelry and rings are! Don’t get confused, it’s not even a metal. As its name suggests, it’s an ultra thin filament made of carbon, and although it can be woven and used to make cloth, it can also appear like metal resembling graphite. It is extremely strong, one third the weight of titanium but half as flexible.

NASA and Formula 1

It’s not surprising that men are attracted to carbon fiber jewelry since it’s known to be an innovative lightweight material used in Formula One race cars that must be light and aerodynamic.

Ducati carbon fiber watch

It’s also what was used to make the NASA Hubble telescope, and has other aerospace applications that require ultra light strength. Naturally jewelry made from anything that is related to words like aerospace, NASA, Formula 1 and high performance, will make men drool!

One company that creates these unique none metallic carbon fiber jewelry pieces is Zoppini who have a stainless steel pendant that is accented by a carbon fiber inset. There’s also the Ducati watch with a carbon fiber dial. These are just a few more unusual jewelry products sold through Titanium Kay.

Italian Jewelry

by Manual and Mauro Zoppini

Zoppini Zo Dark Carbon Fiber and Stainless Steel Band

Florence, Italy, where some of the most astounding art and jewelry creations have been designed throughout history, continue to craft pieces of art, only not in gold but now in cool, clean stainless steel. Zoppini has everything from mens rings to charm bracelets with more than 1,500 styles and pieces to choose from. Their stainless steel is nickel-free and their charms are gold plated brass or hand painted enamel with gemstones soldered into virtually indestructible materials. They have a line called Dare to Love which incorporates blue spinel gemstones, also a collection called Feelings with gold and cubic zirconia mixed with leather, not to mention their line of watches.

The Zoppini collections do not appear to have an exclusive line of titanium rings, but offer mostly stainless steel, however I have included them because they have many quality mens jewelry and accessories that go well with titanium, and also offer many titanium key ring designs and the above mentioned carbon fiber jewelry pieces and also other rings like the Zoppini Zo Dark carbon fiber and stainless steel band that sells for $120 through Forzieri.

Benchmark Titanium Rings and Jewelry

benchmark titanium band

Benchmark is known for it’s unique white gold and yellow gold bands with scattered rubies and sapphires, however, there are about 10 main Benchmark titanium ring styles and about a dozen tungsten bands in their collections. Their retail prices range between $100 and $200. Here are just three examples:

  • Benchmark Titanium Forge® Wedding Ring Brushed & Polished – just under $100
  • Benchmark Titanium & 18K Gold Inlay Satin Wedding Band – $150 to $180 (depending on the width of the band.)
  • Nail Head Titanium Benchmark Wedding Ring – about $125

Titanium and Organic Jewelry for Men

stingray silver mocha

There are unique men’s jewelry creations in some unusual combinations that include inlays of leather, horn and stingray that add to titanium’s masculine appeal. Titanium and silver and stingray leather is a unique combination for a mens ring, since stingray skin is made up of small, very tough, rounded scales that add texture to metal jewelry designs and are totally fire, water, and tear resistant even for those who will wear their jewelry outdoors in a rough or rugged environment. There are stingray leather bracelets, necklaces and pendants and even ladies earrings. These organic textured options are blended wonderfully with modern titanium ring strength and durability for some of the most unique titanium jewelry you can own.

Titanium Kay Laser Engraving for Titanium and Tungsten Rings

Titanium Kay also offers Laser Engraving for titanium and tungsten wedding band rings, which is done through a computer system which allows for a larger variety of fonts and without possible damage to the ring. The laser engraved titanium and tungsten rings end up smooth clear.

Avant-Garde Co.

Titanium Style Custom Titanium Ring Designers

Anant-Garde Co. is a jewelry designing company centered in Maineville, Ohio that sells exclusive titanium jewelry online through titaniumstyle.com. They began designing exclusive titanium jewelry for private clients, and a select few jewelers, and now have not only a large range of ready to wear titanium jewelry products, but also continue their tradition of custom handmade excellence, crafting clean and uncluttered titanium designs that incorporate contrasting metals in sleek contemporary styles.

Through a personalized custom ordering process, they allow clients to completely design their own titanium rings or choose from a basic design and alter according to their individual needs. They offer their expertise with titanium to make your titanium jewelry dreams become a reality. With each titanium ring being individually hand finished, their clients can choose different ring widths, distinctive finishes, a variety of inlay metals, such as 18K or 22K yellow gold, or 14K white gold with platinum, which is 95% platinum and 5% ruthenium, and also to select from different grades of titanium for the base ring. It is also possible to create custom titanium rings using precious stones, gemstones like sapphire, ruby, moissanite and diamonds in inlayed settings or tension set diamond ring styles.

Their ready to wear ring collections can offer inspiration for you to combine the best of any two or three ring styles into one that suits your needs. They will work personally with you until you have exactly the style you need and will provide estimates on custom made pieces so you will know the cost in advance.

They expertly design and produce high quality titanium rings for men and women, clean line titanium bracelets, none scratching tungsten rings, tension set wedding jewelry, which is custom made to match the ring size and diamond size in order that the gemstone may be held in place in the titanium band with constant pressure, with the entire ring being somewhat like a spring. This tension setting allows for very clean and smooth, contemporary titanium wedding rings because the diamonds or gemstones need not be mounted in elaborate settings or with metal prongs. In titanium wedding bands that have tension set diamonds there is nothing holding the diamond except the extraordinary strength of the titanium itself. The diamond rests like magic in a small opening in the titanium band pressed into place as though in a vice grip.

Avant garde flat tungsten carbide with zirconium inlay

Avant-Garde Co also makes tungsten carbide rings with gold, platinum and ceramic inlays, using the finest materials available and the strongest titanium grades, and all the titanium rings are stamped with the grade so there’s never a concern about quality.

They have their own talented titanium jewelry experts who can cut, shape, polish and create high quality custom titanium rings that are not mass-produced cheap titanium ring imitations. They can be contacted directly at 1-888-633-5758 or 1-513-677-3777.

Oh…and by the way, they offer a free ring sizing set, which they will gladly sent to you, so that you can know your exact ring size and that way not be disappointed with your final fit. They do use the comfort fit band in some of their ring styles.

One of their customizable tension set titanium rings that is especially a great womens titanium ring option, is the Flat Titanium Ring series, that uses the tension set technology to hold any selected rectangular shaped stones to create a yellow or blue sapphire ring, titanium ruby ring, garnet ring or a green tourmaline ring, all in clean grey-white titanium bands that may be polished to a mirror-like finish or brushed or what is called a satin finish which is fact less shiny that a polished one. The gemstones are all emerald cut, and the way in which tension set gemstones rest in the ring without anything below them as support, allows for the gemstones to be more translucent due to the way light may pass through the stone unhindered. These unique titanium rings are all priced at just under $300.

avant garde titanium bracelet

Another series that Avant-garde Co. specialize in is the titanium ring inlay styles that incorporate gold for a refined upscale womens or mens titanium ring or wedding band. It is a gold ring with a slightly elevated titanium inlay that uses the technology of a comfort fit band. It is a domed ring and is rounded inside to be comfy and can have different finishes on the outside, like a super polished mirror finish like platinum or a blend of brushed/satin and polished to give contrast. It is completely customizable or ready to wear as you see it; just pick a size. These high quality titanium gold ring designs are all priced at just under $400.

Avant-Garde offers also has a line of exquisite, chic and clean-lined titanium bracelet designs which are made from commercial pure titanium and finished with a high polish that resembles platinum. These pieces are all very lightweight although they appear heavy and are also hypoallergenic and durable for wearing daily. One unique feature of their titanium bracelet is that the clasp is a fold over style that blends perfectly with the streamline riveted plates of titanium to be secure and yet not detract from the fluidity of the bracelet. It is also a very versatile titanium bracelet for men or women since it can be sized by removing links to fit even a small wrist.

The other series of jewelry from Anant-Garde Co. is their Flat Tungsten Carbide Ring with black ceramic (black zirconium) inlay which is unscratchable and maintains its ultra polished shine forever. These titanium ring styles have comfort fit bands and come with a lifetime guarantee. You may request ring engraving on the inside of these tungsten carbide bands.

One of the most Christian Rings is the Holy Trinity titanium and diamonds ring that has three diamonds at the center of each cross, with the central cross being a little larger than the others. It is a devotional ring or a wedding band or simply a Christian symbol to remind you of your faith. It may be a rather expensive reminder of your faith at $729, and so I recommend a similar version, still a titanium Christian ring but without diamonds for just under $300.

In keeping with a somewhat Christian theme, although more “medieval knight” than purely religious, is the Iron Cross Men’s Titanium Bracelet for just under $200, which in fact stands for honor and courage.
